A few weeks ago I met with Lee Howard, business reporter for The Day of New London, CT. He was doing research for a story on how people find new jobs after layoffs.   We had a lively discussion and the result was a terrific article published on Sunday, June 13, 2010. Here’s a link to the. The interview and article got me thinking about all the different ways that one can deal with the loss of a job.   The people profiled in the article essentially came through this difficult time by realizing that they had options beyond the work they had been doing or by embracing radically different working environments. The ability to successfully navigate from a job layoff to a new job or career depends on many factors, although for me the most important is one’s attitude. In this three-part series I will explore how we experience these transitions and share approaches to dealing with the emotions and concerns, and some questions that can facilitate the transition to a new job or career. Losing a job is more than just losing a paycheck and the associated financial security and benefits.   Much has been written during this Great Recession on the financial impact on families so I won’t belabor the point.   Importantly, losing a job takes a major toll on our self-image and sense of belonging.   In the recently published , Rath and Harter indicate that our wellbeing at work impacts all dimensions of our sense of wellbeing.   In part, it is because many of us express ourselves through our work and it is that which gives much of the meaning to our lives – despite what we say about how important family or community is. We spend more hours at and commuting to and from work than we do with our families or in our communities.   It is not rare for people to bring work home and spend a significant amount of their “free” time working or at least thinking and talking about work. Generic viagra ok   when we introduce ourselves, we begin by telling others our job titles or work affiliation. Is it surprising then, that when that job is taken away we feel like a major part of ourselves has been torn away? Ensuring that we have self-image that is strong and vibrant and can exist in the absence of our job is critical for our wellbeing.   Guarding against the loss of "SELF" to our "Corporate Self" is probably easier said generic viagra ok than done.  Here are some questions and activities to help connect with one’s true self -

  • Take time off to do the things you value. No cheating – in order for this to work (no pun intended!) one must be truly present in the moment, whether it is spending time with family, volunteering, or working on a hobby. Notice how it feels to engage with gusto in this activity.
  • Write a list of the things you are – mother, father, sister, runner, basketball player generic viagra ok, guitarist, supervisor, friend, etc. – you get the idea
  • Write a list of your proudest achievement in each of these roles - How do achievements in other parts of your life compare to your work accomplishments? How do these achievements impact you and others?
  • Then ask yourself, what is missing from this list? – What would you like to add in terms of roles or achievements?
  • Spend some time envisioning yourself 10 years from now after you have left your current job – How do you want to remember the last 10 years? What have you accomplished? How do you feel about yourself?
A client and I recently compared losing a job to divorce.   When one loses a job one is essentially “divorcing” a part of her/his own self.   Recognizing that very personal loss and the grief it can bring is important.   Recognizing that one is more than the role one has at work helps regain one’s balance. If you have lost a job, what has helped you regain your sense of self? Please share your thoughts and strategies. In the next blog I will explore ways to create career opportunities and possibilities. In September my colleague Jayne Douglas and I are launching a five-part webinar to better equip you for career transitions.
