Viagra buy now One would have to be completely cut off from all news sources to be unaware of the severe and unprecedented impact of this past week’s storm in the Northeast, viagra buy now in particular New York City and my home state of New Jersey. Viagra buy now The photos, viagra buy now videos and unrelenting newscasts have been a near uninterrupted tale of escalating misery. Viagra buy now As with the many natural disasters that we witnessed in the last couple of years, viagra buy now the constant barrage of news bulletins have the unfortunate consequence of inuring us to human suffering. Viagra buy now But when it hits closer to home, viagra buy now the pain is much harder to ignore.
Viagra buy now As a leadership coach, viagra buy now my thoughts run to what can be learned from the experience. Viagra buy now In any crisis there are those who show true leadership and those who are shown up by their reactions to the situation. Viagra buy now These are the lessons that I am drawing from the current crisis:
Viagra buy now 1. Viagra buy now Focus on what is important – At the end of the day, viagra buy now what is important is people. Viagra buy now Family, viagra buy now friends and loved ones are irreplaceable. Viagra buy now Material goods are only as important as they can provide for our needs: shelter, viagra buy now food, viagra buy now security, viagra buy now etc. Viagra buy now Work unless focused on the immediate needs of others, viagra buy now can usually wait.
Viagra buy now 2. Viagra buy now Focus on the present, viagra buy now not the past or the future – In a crisis it is critically important to be present and to be aware of what is, viagra buy now without filtering through the lens of the past, viagra buy now whether that be relationships and alliances, viagra buy now wrongs or hurts. Viagra buy now In immediate crisis, viagra buy now the focus must be on the task at hand. Viagra buy now If the present is in danger, viagra buy now there is no future.
Viagra buy now 3. Viagra buy now Be the calm in the storm – As a leader others will look to you to be calm. Viagra buy now Even if you are working furiously and managing a million details, viagra buy now you must avoid looking frazzled or distraught. Viagra buy now Your calm demeanor will help others stay focused and able to weather whatever transpires.
Viagra buy now 4. Viagra buy now Focus on things that you can change, viagra buy now not on railing against those you can’t – A crisis is a time for action – calm, viagra buy now measured and planned action. Viagra buy now The circumstances or the situation may not be changeable so focus on what you can impact. Viagra buy now Be aware, viagra buy now though, viagra buy now that there are many things you can change, viagra buy now and beware of assumptions that may keep you from positive and impactful action.
Viagra buy now 5. Viagra buy now Look at the whole picture to avoid unintended consequences – In a crisis, viagra buy now it may be tempting to try easy solutions – solving a single problem in a complex situation. Viagra buy now Be aware that easy solutions may create new problems. Viagra buy now We live in a complex world with complex systems; look at solutions in context of their complex systems. Viagra buy now Fixing a small leak in a way that creates greater pressure further down in the pipe may cause a much larger spill.
Viagra buy now 6. Viagra buy now Roll up your sleeves and help – It probably goes without saying, viagra buy now but most of us assume there is nothing we can do, viagra buy now especially in large-scale disasters. Viagra buy now Even if it is only listening, viagra buy now supporting or giving money, viagra buy now every little act of kindness and caring helps.
Viagra buy now 7. Viagra buy now Plan and prepare for multiple scenarios – The best outcomes from crises happen because the scenario that created them was predicted and a solution set planned. Viagra buy now In NYC after the attack on September 11, viagra buy now 2001, viagra buy now the execution of the evacuation and rescue plan was carefully planned and rehearsed. Viagra buy now Although the attack itself may not have been a predicted scenario, viagra buy now the response, viagra buy now in all of its layers and components, viagra buy now indeed, viagra buy now was carefully planned.
Viagra buy now 8. Viagra buy now Leave politics aside – If you focus on the present, viagra buy now solving the crisis and helping people, viagra buy now there is no room for decisions based on politics. Viagra buy now In this current crisis, viagra buy now I admired Governor Christie’s (not my favorite governor) ability to accept and give praise where it was due, viagra buy now even though it meant a potential loss of favor with his own party.
Viagra buy now 9. Viagra buy now Be authentic, viagra buy now you can’t “play” a crisis to gain favor – Though a crisis may show who is a true leader, viagra buy now using a crisis for personal gain is, viagra buy now at minimum, viagra buy now distasteful. Viagra buy now Using a crisis as a “photo op” or to justify political posturing can be easily seen for what it is: inauthentic, viagra buy now shameless opportunism.
Viagra buy now 10. Viagra buy now Recognize when you must change a decision – again, viagra buy now in the current crisis, viagra buy now Mayor Bloomberg of NYC handled things beautifully, viagra buy now with empathy, viagra buy now great planning and execution. Viagra buy now Although he presented very good reasons, viagra buy now the decision to go ahead with the scheduled NYC Marathon was the exception. Viagra buy now However, viagra buy now once it was clear that the decision would get in the way of his ability to continue to engage the public and organizations in the relief effort, viagra buy now he recognized that the decision had to change, viagra buy now whatever the cost. Viagra buy now Neither of the decisions, viagra buy now the original or the reversal, viagra buy now were easy and I cannot say either one was right or wrong. Viagra buy now The ability to take ownership of a mistake and move to solve it does not diminish the leader.
Viagra buy now What other lessons do you draw from this painful crisis? What do leaders who exemplify these capabilities do with their teams? Please share your examples and ideas.
